Eric Wolfe was 23 years old, he loved golf, racquetball, photography, his work and his family and friends. He was a very energetic, creative young man who had a great sense of humor. And, he was a second year grad student at UW Madison majoring in Graphic Design when he was diagnosed with Brain Cancer. The radiation and the chemotherapy treatments were demanding while maintaining his graduate school schedule therefore he had to make the difficult decision to put school on hold. Eric was later able to work as a graphic designer and free-lance artist – a field he was passionate about. Dr. Mehta, at the University of Wisconsin Comprehensive Cancer Center, was his primary physician for his radiation and chemotherapy treatments. Eric’s early prognosis was 3-5 years. We had always hoped that a new and more effective treatment would become available to extend his life. Progress was made, but not fast enough. While Dr. Mehta’s clinical trials made it possible for Eric to survive almost 5 years, Eric died in October 1996 at the age of 28. Our friends suggested that we do something special that would help continue the medical advancements and at the same time keep Eric’s memory alive. This is how Golf Fore Wolfe & A Cure (GFW) began. We have devoted the past eight years to raising money so brain tumor patients will have a better chance to extend their life. Eric received his treatment at the UW Comprehensive Cancer Center and therefore we have designated this great clinical and research facility as the recipient of our efforts. There are two major goals with this charitable event: - To raise money for brain cancer research in the form of the “Eric Wolfe Brain Tumor Professorship”. It takes $500,000 to start the professorship. - To keep Eric’s memory alive through a one day event of golf, telling stories and having fun with friends and family. Sponsorship Opportunities: It does not seem possible but it will be our 12th Annual event for Brain Cancer Research and Education! We have been fortunate the past eleven years to have so many corporations and individuals support our charitable event. These funds are being used for brain tumor research by Dr. Mehta in the Human Oncology Department at the UW Paul Carbone Comprehensive Cancer Center in Madison, Wisconsin. 13th Annual GFW will be held
Saturday, June 18, 2011! SAVE THE DATE!
The
12th annual Golf Fore Wolfe & A Cure event will be held on June 26,
2010 at the Iron Wood Golf Course. Last year we held the event
at Ironwood and it was a great course and a great time. I
think everyone enjoyed the challenge of this fine golf course.
